This page contains a chronological list of the courses that I have completed through my Masters of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program at Michigan State University.

CEP 807: Capstone Portfolio Course
Dr. Matthew Koehler and Aric Gaunt
Dr. Matthew Koehler and Aric Gaunt
The final course for my MAET degree brought together all the different pieces of my coursework into one professional online portfolio. It was a fun and engaging experience to use the techniques and tools that I learned to look back on how far I've come in the last four years and create something that I am proud to show!

CEP 816: Teaching and Learning Across the Curriculum
Elizabeth Boltz
Elizabeth Boltz
CEP 816 really stretch my horizons for new technology tips, tricks and tools. I was able to gain more experience with Flipgrid, video and document annotation, Padlet and gif creation. One of my favorite assignment throughout the MAET program was the Dream Project that I was able to create in this course. It was incredibly useful to create content and activities that can be used in my everyday teaching. We also took some time to deep dive into the effects of cognitive load. It was a real eye opener for me both as a student and as a teacher.

CEP 813: Electronic Assessment for Teaching and Learning
Alison Keller and Chris Sloan
Alison Keller and Chris Sloan
CEP 813 was based on assessments and specifically how they related to the electronic and online environment. This was the first time, shameful to say that I finally had a concrete understanding of the differences between formative and summative assessments. I found it extremely helpful to create the Assessment Design Checklist and add to it almost every week. This incorporated the slightly different topics from week to week and formed a place where we (the students who are also teachers) use that topic and content and apply it to our own personal teaching situations in the context of assessments. In addition we were able to spend some time exploring and evaluating different content management systems as well as the creation of assessments.

CEP 820: Teaching Students Online
Anne Heintz and Marissa Zhu
Anne Heintz and Marissa Zhu
I was specifically excited for this course. I had been teaching online for a few years and I knew that I wanted to learn specific tips, tricks and tools to further my online career. This course allowed me to learn about different online learning platforms and course management systems and to create my own course from scratch. I was also able to learn about Universal Design for Learning for the first time. The information and skills I learned in this course have proved incredibly valuable ever since.

CEP 812: Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice
Brittany Dillman and Emily Sloan

This course (CEP 812) was full of problems, questions and ideas. It was a mix of reading, questioning, thinking and creating. The first task required thinking about a special learning need. For me it was dyslexia. Then we went onto finding a wicked problem. I decided to research and study social promotion and retention in K-12 schools. Besides learning a great deal more about both of these topics, I think my biggest takeaway was what I learned about the questioning process itself. How to use questions appropriately and how important it is to continue to question ourselves and the world around us.
Summer 2018
CEP 800: Learning in School and Other Settings
CEP 815: Technology and Leadership
CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Leadership
Brittany Dillman and Dave Goodrich

CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Leadership

I had the amazing opportunity to join 11 of my MAET peers in the Michigan State University Summer Hybrid Program. We met in person, on campus for two weeks and then worked for another four weeks online. To say this was an experience of a lifetime wouldn't do it justice. I participate in 'quick-fire' challenges, worked in the TinkrLab, researched and conducted an experiment on cognitive development and created a research project. We worked together to provide 'tech tips' to our classmates, conducted a learning space analysis and produced a 3x3x3 instructional video. And to top if off, we read the entirety of Daniel Willingham’s When Can You Trust The Experts? This book pushed the boundaries of my perceptions of 'experts' and research.

These two courses were the beginning of my Educational Technology journey. Honestly, I wasn't sure what I was getting into and these courses hit me over the head with what Michigan State University stood for and the creative adventure I was about to embark in. I was introduced to Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and the 'maker culture' for the first time! The Cooking with TPACK activity and working with my Squishy Circuits were two of my most memorable experiences of all! Also, deep diving into Copyright and Fair Use policy is something I still think about, use and teach my students to this day! These courses have definitely stuck with me over the years!
